Harrietville offers an ideal year round holiday destination for families, couples and groups. This picturesque mountain village is situated approximately 25 km from Bright and lays alongside the Great Alpine Road. It is the last town before Mount Hotham and is an historic goldmining town, settled in 1852.
Harrietville was properly named in 1861 after a woman called Harriet Tisdale, one of the few white women living in this area at the time. In 1879 Harrietville was proclaimed a town. Its history is captured in a riverside park that celebrates the local pioneers, and is a pleasant spot to picnic or stretch your legs.
During the warmer months Harrietville offers family fun activities such as camping, fishing, berry picking, bushwalking, bike riding or learning the colourful history of gold mining in the valley. If you’re properly equipped and fit, you can take the walking tracks to Mount Hotham or Mount Feathertop, in the Alpine National Park, which are challenging but spectacular.
Both the Bungalow Spur Track and Bon Accord Spur begin in Harrietville, leading a challenging path to Mount Feathertop, the second highest peak in Victoria (1922m) in the Alpine National Park.
Motorbike riders and cyclists will love staying in Harrietville with great cafes to fuel up before they ride one a multitude of roads/tracks/tours available. Many depart for the Mount Hotham leg of the 7 Peaks Alpine Ascent Challenge in Harrietville before returning to relax and enjoy a hearty meal in one of the country pubs.
Harrietville currently thrives on tourism and the ski industry, a beautiful township providing a relaxing and ideal holiday destination. Harrietville is a great affordable base during the winter for family ski holidays visiting the nearby Victorian ski fields, Mount Hotham and Falls Creek. Within driving distance of these two ski fields you can get the best of both.
