• Start in Bright and ride to Myrtleford, stay the Happy Valley Hotel, breakfast at Butterfactory before riding to Miliwa for a gourmet fix, followed by the final leg into Wangaratta - the orginal Murray to Mountains Rail Trail
• Ride from Bright to Wandiligong, a beautiful historic township - be sure to stop at the Wandiligong Maze's for a piece of their famous sponge.

Why Visit?

Imagine cycling nearly 100 kilometres along an easy, sealed trail through an ever-changing Great Alpine Valleys backdrop, stopping at historic towns and at wineries where the ‘open’ sign invites you to the cellar door. Well, that’s the 98-kilometre Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail, arguably Australia’s best cycling trail. Following historic railway lines, where many old station sites can still be seen, the trail winds its way from Bright to Myrtleford with a detour to Beechworth before arriving in Wangaratta. The gradients are gentle, so the ride is suitable for all ages and levels of fitness. 

The Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail is not only great for cycling but walking as well.  Work up an appetite and walk 6km from Bright to Porepunkah before indulging in lunch at the Rail Trail Cafe.  Or incorporate a walk with wine tasting, stroll from Porepunkah to Ringer Reef Winery or Boynton's Winery; taste the wines, sample the food, enjoy a coffee or just take in some of the most spectacular views of Mt Buffalo.

Take advantage of local farm gate produces and wineries dotted along The Murray to the Mountain Rail Trail with Pedal to Produce.  Pick up a basket for your bike along with a booklet full of great offers from our Visitor Information Centers in Bright, Myrtleford, Mt Beauty, Beechworth and Wangaratta.

If riding in one direction along the rail trail suits you but not the thought of riding home, there is a Bus-a-Bike service that will pick up and drop off anywhere along The Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail. Or for a hassle free approached and an ideal way to the experience the entire length of The Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail, including stops in some of our finest wineries and pubs, try a fully supported Rail Trail tour, with vehicle support and guides from the Snowline Hotel.
